I first met Fred in the mud of Kawangware, Kenya. He was sent there, with Nancy of course, to create a model farm by teaching the men of the village not only how to install and maintain drip irrigation on a hillside which would produce beautiful crops, but to teach them how to package the produce for market to make it a viable cottage industry. He more than succeeded. Fred did not know the word impossible.

My memories of Fred are of a soft spoken man whose passion for the earth and alternative medicine was infectious. It was not just his passion that made all who knew him a believer in his causes; it was his profound knowledge about the subject and his ability to communicate difficult concepts through stories.

When I visited Fred last year in Songaia, although I went there with the specific intent of comforting him, I came away with a sense of calm and profound gratitude for having been in the presence of a man not only aware of his finiteness, but one who had embraced it and invited you to embrace it with and through him.

As long as I live — he will live —as a part of my council of elders.

Fred was the shining guiding light at my “workplace”, One Sky Medicine. My friend Phyllis Wellman who shared an office with him there told me so. She was right. When you were near Fred, it was like putting your face into a sunny window on a winters day. Warm peace just emanated from him. He had such clarity and vision. Looking through the photos here brought that spirit back to my heart. He will be so missed by so many. Dearest Nancy, I’m so glad you have your kids and grandkids and Songaia family to surround you and help fill the space of your heart that is surely aching. Peace be with you. Namaste, Fred. Your light still shines in all of us. Maureen Meyer

  3. I remember meeting Fred first through a mutual friend, Ken. Through Ken, I gained insight into a bright, shining soul. Many months later, when I met Fred in person, we enjoyed a cup of coffee together. What I recall most vividly was his s radiant spirit–animated, celebratory, & brimming with optimism & faith. Among the many things we spoke about, I shared with Fred my love of singing. Before we parted, he invited me & my husband to visit him & his wife at Songaia, which we did. I’m blessed to have known Fred ever so briefly… & to have shared a small moment with him & the Songaia. ~ Gloria
